24/7 call-outs
Emergency electrician in Remuera, 24 hours a day
Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If something in your Remuera home or business is sparking, smells of burning or has lost power, call 021 156 4005.
First, keep everyone safe
If there is smoke or flame, get everyone out and call 111. If someone has had an electric shock and is still touching the source, do not touch them; turn the power off at the main switch if you can reach it safely, then call 111. Stay well clear of any power line that is down or sagging, in the street or on your own section, and keep others away from it.
When nobody is in danger, turning off the circuit involved, or the main switch, is usually the safest thing to do before you call us. Leave anything that smells hot or looks scorched switched off and unplugged until it has been checked.
Is it your house, or the street?
A few quick checks tell you whether you need an electrician or the network company. If the whole street is dark, it is an outage on the network, and Vector's power outages page lets you check your address for a current outage and report one.
Look at the neighbours
Street lights and next door's windows out too? It is almost certainly a network outage, not your wiring.
Look at your switchboard
A breaker or RCD that has dropped to off points to a fault on one circuit in your own house.
Reset it once
If it trips again straight away, leave it off. Something on that circuit has a fault, and it needs an electrician.
Unplug and try again
If it holds with everything unplugged, plug items back in one at a time. The one that trips it is your culprit.
Note what you saw
A bang, a smell, a flicker before it went: details like these help the electrician find the fault faster.
What counts as an electrical emergency
Call us straight away, day or night, for any of these:
- a burning smell, smoke, or scorch marks around a socket, switch, light or the switchboard
- sparks, crackling or buzzing from an outlet, fitting or the board
- a shock or tingle from a tap, an appliance or a switch
- part of the house without power and no tripped breaker to explain it
- water near wiring, sockets or the switchboard after a leak or a storm
- a damaged service line or a branch resting on the line to your house
Remuera's big established trees are part of its character, and they are also one of the things Vector names as a leading cause of outages when they grow into lines. The service line from the point of supply to the meter belongs to the property owner. If a branch damages it in a storm, keep clear and report it to Vector, which says it will make the line safe; the owner then arranges the repair, which Vector says must be done by suitably qualified people. A fault that turns out to be old wiring is covered on our rewiring older homes page.
Shops, cafes and offices
A business without power cannot cook, chill, take payments or keep its lights on, and that is as urgent as a fault at home. Our electricians work on commercial premises too, and Remuera's range from shops along Remuera Road, some of them in buildings more than a century old, to the shopping strip that grew up around the Upland Road corner in the 1920s. If an old switchboard behind the counter keeps tripping, a switchboard upgrade may be the lasting fix once the immediate fault is made safe.
Emergency questions
What should I tell you when I call?
Your address, what happened and when, what is off, and anything you saw, heard or smelled. Tell us if anyone has had a shock.
Should I call Vector or an electrician?
Vector looks after the network up to the point of supply on your boundary or the nearest pole. For wiring inside your house, Vector itself says to contact your electrician, and the service line from the boundary to the meter is the owner's.
The street's power is back but ours is not. What now?
Check your switchboard for a tripped breaker or RCD first, and call us if one will not reset. If nothing has tripped, Vector's advice is that your service line may be at fault and to call Vector. Vector also notes that after an outage a property can stay off until a safety issue has been assessed.
Is a tingle from a tap really urgent?
Yes. A shock or tingle from a tap, an appliance or a switch can mean a fault in the wiring or the earthing. Stop using it and call straight away.
Do you really come out in the middle of the night?
Yes. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 021 156 4005.
